I Am Not My Hair..Or Am I??

Many of you know that I've been growing out of relaxer. I've had it relaxed for some time now and decided last March that I wanted to go back to my roots. It's been an interesting journey because I have NO idea what my hair will look like once I finally chop off all the relaxed ends.

Here's the thing..I'm getting impatient now. I'm at the point where I want to chop it or relax it all again. I can't stand the wait. I asked Kai, my hairdresser, how long it would be now if I cut the relaxed part off and it'd be considerably shorter, but not horrible. I want a change, but I don't want a change...if any of that makes sense.

HELP! What should I do??

  1. I've been natural for almost 2 years and my hair still isn't 100% trained yet. It will take awhile for your hair to bounce back but it is so worth it. To make it easier I suggest changing your hair products now. I use that Wen stuff and it actually works. Carol's Daughter products are good too. And try to stay away from pony tails. Natural hair is fragile and it may break off if you keep pulling it back.

  2. Right before I gave birth, I had most of the dyed ends of my hair cut off because I wanted to go back to my natural (maintenance free) color. And because I didn't want to deal with the post-birth shedding when I had over a foot of thick, fried-out hair. And because I didn't want my hair to drag in spit-up, baby poop, etc.

The hairdresser kept asking me if I was sure because she was cutting off a LOT of hair and said some women freak out. But I looked at it as a fun transformation into a new phase of my life and reminded myself that, of course, it grows back if I want long hair again.

If you want some advice on hair products, talk to my blogger friend Miss Moppet (profoundlyshallow.blogspot.com) a.k.a. Christina Lamson on Facebook. She has been doing mad experimentation on all kinds of products for natural black hair as her wedding approaches. Lady rocks the natural curls!

  3. I will probably still go to my hairdresser every 2 weeks until I feel comfortable doing it on my own. She said that if I did finally make the chop, I'd have to wear it a specific way for it to look good. It's definitely way above the shoulders. I'm super super nervous about doing it! But at the same time, I'd love to just be able to take care of my own hair if I wanted to.

  4. Shave it off, start fresh. I'm about to with mine, I have my highlights around my neck and it's bleached out, DRY and unhappy.

  5. I use Wen, too-- it completely changed my frizzy mop into healthy, thick, wavy hair and now the curl is is beautiful, like it was when I was 17.

I use the tea-tree, which is for people who have problem scalp (I don't have to use dandruff shampoo anymore). You might have to try a few different types-- there's a sampler you can try. It took about 3 weeks to work, and it was weird at first. But I don't think I'll ever go back to regular shampoo.

Good luck-- I think you would look fabulous with natural hair in twists. That would look really good on you.
